Allied health in Wollongong and the Illawarra: coverage, travel and getting started
Bloom Healthcare takes allied health enquiries across Wollongong. The service is mobile: a clinician travels to the address where support is needed — home, school, workplace, day program or another community setting — rather than asking you to attend a clinic. Telehealth is available where travel rather than clinical need is the obstacle.
The Illawarra is a narrow strip between the escarpment and the coast, and travel along it is not the same as travel across a city grid. The Wollongong areas below are enquiry locations, not a confirmed clinician catchment, and for another Illawarra town or a different service address the precise postcode is needed so availability and travel can be assessed separately. To check an address, call 1300 771 465 or email hello@bloom-healthcare.com.au.
Areas around Wollongong
- Wollongong
- North Wollongong
- West Wollongong
- Gwynneville
- Keiraville
- Coniston
These describe where support is needed rather than confirming that a clinician in every discipline is currently available in each. Availability is a travel radius around where clinicians are based, it differs by discipline, and it changes with capacity. Give the exact postcode and the discipline, and ask what is available now.
Beyond Wollongong
Shellharbour, Kiama, Dapto, Corrimal, Thirroul, Bulli and the towns further north and south are separate location checks. So is anything on the escarpment side where access is slower than the map suggests. Name the town rather than saying "near Wollongong", because the two produce different answers.
Sydney is covered separately, and the New South Wales guide explains how other NSW addresses are assessed.
Which funding stream applies to you
The funding pathway usually matters more than the postcode, because it decides what can be arranged, who approves it and who pays.
NDIS participants. Allied health is normally funded from the Capacity Building budget under Improved Daily Living. You do not need a GP referral to start an NDIS allied health enquiry. If your plan is NDIA-managed you must use a registered provider, and Bloom Healthcare is registered (Registration no 4-JR6F5KX, Provider no 4050148863). Self-managed and plan-managed participants can use either registered or unregistered providers. The NDIS page sets out the detail.
Older Australians. In-home aged care is funded through the Support at Home program, which replaced the Home Care Packages Program and the Short-Term Restorative Care Programme on 1 November 2025. Allied health sits in the Clinical Supports category. Access starts with an aged care assessment through My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 — Bloom does not decide anyone's funding, and no provider can. See the Support at Home hub and aged care services.
Medicare and private. Psychology and counselling can be accessed under a valid referral, and self-funded arrangements are available where no plan is in place. See Medicare services, pricing and the FAQ.
Which disciplines you can ask about
Occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, psychology and counselling, exercise physiology, dietetics, positive behaviour support and paediatric therapy.
Start with the goal rather than the profession: showering without help, being understood at preschool, managing the stairs, eating without coughing, getting back to work. Each points at a discipline, and the intake team can make that call faster than a guess.
Where more than one discipline is relevant, raise it as one enquiry. Mobility and confidence often drop together after a fall, and physiotherapy, occupational therapy and sometimes psychology arranged together produce one coordinated plan rather than three that do not reference each other.
Where sessions happen
Services are delivered in your home, which lets a clinician assess the environment you actually live in; in schools and early learning settings; in workplaces for employment-related goals; in day programs and community settings; in residential aged care; by secure video or phone; and in a therapy or consulting room arranged case by case.
For a community session the destination matters. Working on a route you genuinely use — the walk to a particular shop, a station, a beach path — produces more useful information than a generic outing.
Travel, setting and cost
Travel time is priced into in-home and community sessions, so where the session happens affects what is charged. For addresses outside central Wollongong, ask specifically how travel is treated for your postcode and what a typical appointment length would be.
In-person is the right call when the setting is the point: home safety, transfers and falls risk, equipment prescription, or a community session built around a real destination.
Telehealth earns its place for programme progression, family and carer education, planning, short reviews and keeping continuity between visits. Ask at booking whether the specific assessment you need can be done remotely, because some can and some cannot.
Assessment and report work
Not everything booked here is ongoing therapy. Functional capacity assessments, assistive technology and equipment prescription, home modifications and housing assessments all produce a report a funder can act on, and each carries two timeframes: the appointment date and the report turnaround. If a plan review date is involved, say so on the first call, because it determines who is allocated and how much time is set aside. The hours and the cost are quoted before the assessment begins and set out in the service agreement.
Children, school and early childhood
Therapy for children is delivered where the child already spends the day — home, childcare, preschool or school. School sessions need the school's agreement and the family's consent arranged in advance, so raise it on the first call.
The NDIS early childhood approach applies to children younger than 9; children younger than 6 with developmental delay can access support without a formal diagnosis, and children aged 6 to 9 with an identified disability are eligible. See paediatric therapy and Thriving Kids.
Aged care in the Illawarra
Under Support at Home, allied health is a Clinical Support, and access begins with an aged care assessment through My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. Bloom does not decide anyone's funding.
The services most often involved are occupational therapy for equipment, home safety and daily activities, physiotherapy for mobility, balance and falls prevention, exercise physiology for strength and endurance, and speech pathology for communication and swallowing. Assistive technology and home modifications run through a separate pathway with their own funding, and home modifications must be prescribed by an occupational therapist.
If something is not working
If the clinician is not the right match, if the sessions are not moving towards the goals you set, or if the arrangement has stopped suiting your week, say so rather than letting it drift. A review is a normal part of the work.
The feedback page explains how to raise a concern, the advocacy policy covers your right to an advocate and how to arrange one, and the incident management policy sets out how incidents are recorded and reported.
Supported decision-making
Where someone needs help to make or communicate a decision about their own supports, that help should build their capacity rather than replace their voice. Supported decision-making sets out how that works in practice and who can be involved, which matters at intake when consent, goals and the service agreement are being settled.

How to start
Call 1300 771 465, email hello@bloom-healthcare.com.au, or use the referrals page. Anyone can refer: the person themselves, a parent or carer, a GP or paediatrician, a support coordinator, a plan manager, a school, a SIL provider, another health professional, or a nominee or guardian.
Useful information to include is the person's age, the main concerns, any existing reports or assessments, relevant history, the goals that matter to the family, and the best contact details.
A member of the team will be in contact within 24 hours of receiving a referral. The referral is then triaged and matched to a clinician on capacity, location, skill set and the specific need. A welcome pack and intake form follow, and nothing is scheduled until the intake form is completed and returned. Bloom aims to schedule the initial meeting within 5 business days where possible. Rates, hours, travel and reporting are set out in a service agreement that is discussed and signed before service delivery and billing begin.
If something is not working once services start, the feedback page explains how to raise it, the advocacy policy covers your right to an advocate, and the incident management policy sets out how incidents are handled and reported.
What does Bloom Healthcare's Wollongong page cover?
The page addresses allied health enquiries across Wollongong and the Illawarra, explains why other Illawarra towns need their own location check, outlines which funding stream might apply, and describes how to get started with Bloom Healthcare.
Which suburbs around Wollongong can I use as a starting postcode for an enquiry?
You can start with a service postcode in Wollongong, North Wollongong, West Wollongong, Gwynneville, Keiraville or Coniston, or ask about another nearby address. These examples do not confirm current clinician availability—Bloom Healthcare checks the specific discipline, address and setting.
Does the Wollongong page guarantee services across the entire Illawarra region?
No. The page focuses on Wollongong enquiries only. For other Illawarra locations, you need to identify the town and exact service postcode, as coverage, travel and suitable delivery options require an individual check. Neither this page nor the Sydney guide establishes region-wide home visits.
Can I request a home visit from Bloom Healthcare in Wollongong?
Yes, you can enquire about home or community appointments. Bloom Healthcare checks the requested discipline, exact service postcode, clinical suitability and current clinician availability before confirming a visit, and travel and fees are agreed before booking.
What funding pathways can be discussed for Wollongong allied health services?
You can ask about NDIS, aged care and Support at Home, Medicare psychology, private services, or another relevant referral pathway. Eligibility, service scope, practitioner requirements and payment arrangements vary, and an enquiry does not establish funding approval.
Do I need a referral ready before contacting Bloom Healthcare about Wollongong services?
No, you can begin with an enquiry without having every document ready. Bloom Healthcare will confirm the referral, clinical information, consent and funding requirements for the service, and health records should only be sent through the approved secure referral process.
Is there a physical Bloom Healthcare clinic in Wollongong that I can visit?
You should not travel to a presumed clinic address. Bloom Healthcare primarily delivers services in homes and community settings, with suitable telehealth also considered. Any clinic appointment, actual address and access arrangements must be explicitly confirmed.
What allied health disciplines does Bloom Healthcare provide in the Wollongong area?
Bloom Healthcare provides occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, psychology and counselling, exercise physiology, dietetics, and positive behaviour support, with clinicians traveling to clients' homes, schools, workplaces, day programs, and community settings.
Which Illawarra towns outside Wollongong require a separate availability check with Bloom Healthcare?
Towns such as Shellharbour, Kiama, Dapto, Corrimal, Thirroul, and Bulli require individual location assessment, as they are separate checks from central Wollongong.
Who is the audience for Bloom Healthcare's Wollongong allied health service?
The service is available to NDIS, aged care, Medicare and privately funded clients, and enquiries can be made online via Bloom Healthcare's contact page.
